Man Pretending to Be an Insurance Agent Arrested for Selling Fake Policies
A man in Louisville, KY, was arrested on January 10th for posing as a Safe Auto Insurance agent and selling bogus car insurance coverage to someone for $200. The fake agent, Maurice Rhodes, accepted the amount in cash from a man at a flea market and told him that the insurance cards would arrive in the mail soon.
The victim didn't seem to think that it was out of the ordinary to buy insurance coverage from a random dude at a flea market, so he didn't suspect foul play until the insurance company sent him a notice stating his bank had returned a check. At that point the victim thought "Wait a second, who buys insurance policies with cash at a flea market?" and decided it would be a good idea to get the police involved.
Rhodes admitted that he wasn't actually an insurance agent and that he had just made up fake policy numbers. He was arrested and charged with theft by deception. Meanwhile, the victim was charged with being incredibly gullible but was let off with a warning. A friendly reminder to those of you who are shopping around for an affordable car insurance policy: don't literally shop around for one at a flea market.
