South Carolina Pushing Bill That Would Tow Cars with No Proof of Insurance

South Carolina has proposed a bill that would tow the vehicles of drivers who don't have car insurance coverage. If an uninsured driver got pulled over by police for any reason, the bill would require police officers to impound the vehicle and the driver would have to pay a $350 fine plus any costs associated with towing and impounding his or her car.
Obviously this law and the associated costs with breaking it would likely encourage uninsured drivers to get some sort of coverage, although South Carolina currently allows drivers to pay an annual $550 fee should they choose to drive without any kind of car insurance. Under this new bill, which was proposed in November and is being considered in the House Committee of Labor, Commerce, and Industry, a driver would not be able to get his vehicle back until he presented proof of insurance.
